High School
A minimum of a high school diploma (plus on-the-job training) is required to enter this career, but many technicians have associate’s or bachelor’s degrees.
In high school, take courses in mathematics, physics, and general science. In shop classes, you’ll learn how to use hand tools, safely operate power tools, and build and repair things. Good communication skills are important in this occupation, so be sure to take classes in English, speech, writing, and a foreign language.
Postsecondary Education
Some aspiring technicians train for the field by earning a two- or four-year degree in building systems technology; mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering technology; computer science; or a related field.
Other aspiring technicians participate in formal or informal apprenticeships in building automation, electronics, engineering technology, or a related field. Apprenticeships typically last one to two years. Participating in an apprenticeship is a good approach because this type of training is free and apprentices receive a salary while they learn. The U.S. military also provides training to aspiring technicians, although those who pursue this route will need to augment their education with classes or certificates in building automation. Certification
Long- and short-term certificate programs are offered by colleges and universities, manufacturers, professional associations, and other providers. For example, the Community College of Baltimore County offers a building automation systems technician certificate program that will take students 12 to 18 months to complete. To earn the certificate, students must take the following courses:
- Advanced HVAC Electricity
- Basic HVAC Electricity
- Commercial Controls Systems
- Commercial HVAC Systems
- Construction Blueprint Reading
- Introduction to Computer-Aided Design
- Networking and Data Communications
- One of the following classes: A+ Certification PC Technician Module; or Windows Server
The International Society of Automation (ISA) offers a three-day class, Introduction to Building Automation Systems. Students who complete the course receive a certificate of completion. The ISA also offers certificates in automation project management, cybersecurity, safety, and other fields. To obtain a certificate, students must complete a designated training program, meet prerequisites (for certain credentials), and pass a multiple-choice exam.
Other Education or Training
Automation technology manufacturers, professional associations, postsecondary institutions, and other providers offer webinars and in-person classes to help participants expand their knowledge and meet re-certification requirements. The ISA offers online, classroom, and self-paced modular courses on critical topics, as well as other educational opportunities. Recent classes included Connectivity and Cybersecurity, Process Automation and Control, Operations and Management, Digital Transformation and Industry 4.0, and Factory Automation and Machine Control. The Association of Controls Professionals, national engineering and technology associations, and organizations at the state and local levels also provide learning opportunities. Additionally, industrial companies offer webinars and classes. For example, Carrier offers courses via its Carrier University, and Johnson Controls offers HVAC and building automation training courses at its Training Institute.
