Underwater welders are specialized welders who use wet and dry welding techniques to maintain, repair, and construct ships, oil rigs, pipelines, bridges, and other submerged objects and structures. They do their work in oceans, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water. Underwater welders, who are also known as hyperbaric welders, also work in nuclear power plants. About 457,300 welders and related workers are employed in the United States. Underwater welders comprise a small percent of this total.
