Employers
Underwater welders are employed by shipping companies, oil and gas exploration businesses, construction and engineering firms, and any other business that requires the maintenance, repair, and construction of submerged objects and structures. Other employers include the U.S. Navy, Army Corps of Engineers, and science organizations and government agencies that conduct research in water-based settings.
Starting Out
Underwater welders typically obtain several years of experience in general welding, as well as earn diving certification, before receiving training that prepares them to work in this challenging specialty. Welders can learn about job opportunities through unions and the career services office of their school, by attending career fairs, and by contacting employers directly about potential job openings.
