To prepare for a career in underwater welding, you’ll need to complete several years of experience as a general welder plus earn a commercial diving certification. You’ll also need to complete specialized training in underwater welding.
Underwater welders must be in excellent physical condition because they work in extreme conditions (e.g., rough currents, freezing conditions) and because they must be able to lift and set up heavy welding equipment. They also need the ability to stay calm and focused under pressure. Other important traits include a detail-oriented personality, top-notch analytical and problem-solving skills, strong spatial orientation abilities, and good organizational and time-management skills. Underwater welders must also be excellent divers.
