The value of the worldwide building automation system market is expected to grow from $77.09 billion in 2023 to $130.13 billion by 2030, according to Fortune Business Insights (a market research firm). This translates into a compound annual growth rate of 7.8 percent during this time span. Fortune Business Insights says that “growth is influenced by several factors, including rapid urbanization, robust infrastructure development, energy management systems, and constant monitoring of electronic assets connected to the systems. These systems allow efficient energy utilization for several appliances, including heating, ventilation, lighting, and enhanced security and safety systems. In addition, government regulations and energy management standards are bolstering the market.”

Job opportunities in building automation will also increase as the industry expands to installing building automation systems in small- to medium-sized buildings (i.e., under 50,000 square feet). These buildings comprise virtually all commercial buildings in the United States, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Only a small percentage of these buildings have a BAS.

Technology continues to change building automation systems and the skills needed to design, build, troubleshoot, and repair them. Technicians who have expertise in the Industrial Internet of Things, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (including machine learning), and data and predictive analytics will have the best employment prospects.
