Building automation systems technicians work in buildings that are being constructed, as well as in completed buildings in which automation systems will be installed, repaired, or upgraded. On site, technicians can be exposed to high temperatures, loud noises, and other challenging conditions. Technicians also spend time working in offices, meeting with engineers, other technicians, and managers; conducting research; writing reports; and evaluating data. Many technicians work a standard, Monday through Friday, 9:00-to-5:00 workweek, but others have to work at night and on weekends to meet project deadlines or address automation technology performance issues.
The majority of building automation systems technicians enjoy their careers. In fact, technicians who were surveyed by PayScale.com gave the profession four stars (out of five), according to results published in 2024.
