Organized insurance was first developed in the shipping industry during the late 1600s as a means of sharing the risks of commercial voyages. Underwriters received a fee for the portion of the financial responsibility they covered.
As the need for further protection developed, other types of insurance were created. After the London Fire of 1666, fire insurance became available in England. Life insurance first appeared in the United States in 1759; accident insurance followed in 1863; and automobile insurance was instituted in 1898.
Now, millions of dollars worth of insurance policies are written every day. Skilled claims examiners, medical-voucher clerks, and other insurance workers are needed to process applications and claims accurately and efficiently so clients get the coverage to which they are entitled.
