Many theater managers work their way up the career ladder to management positions. They start in entry-level theater positions and, after obtaining experience, move up the ranks. Some managers work their way up to management positions, while others earn degrees that prepare them for high-level jobs in the industry.
Theater managers need an array of skills. They must be creative individuals with a vision in order to make their theater (and its productions) successful. Theater managers should have marketing acumen, accounting skills, business skills, and more. The ability to get along well with people is mandatory. Strong communications skills, both written and verbal, are essential. Theater managers must have ability to multitask effectively and be calm under pressure. A knowledge of theater production is required.
