Animal Physical Therapists

Education and Training Requirements

High School

Take college preparatory courses in biology, animal science, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, health, and mathematics. You’ll need strong communication skills to interact with clients, so take speech, English, and foreign language classes. Since many APTs operate their own therapy companies, it’s a good idea to take business, entrepreneurism, computer science, and marketing courses.

Postsecondary Education

The majority of people who become APTs first train to work as a physical therapist for humans or as a veterinarian. Physical therapists must earn a doctor of physical therapy degree, which typically last three years. They also must complete clinical experience via supervised fieldwork at a hospital, in a home care setting, or at a nursing home. Veterinarians must earn a doctor of veterinary medicine, which requires a minimum of four years of study at an accredited college of veterinary medicine. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required to pursue advanced study in physical therapy and veterinary science.

A person who is interested in becoming an APT will take classes in animal behavior and handling, anatomy, biomechanics, comparative physiology, infectious diseases, pathology, diagnostic techniques, imaging techniques, treatment modalities, and other topics. Most complete an internship or a clinical experience at an employer that provides animal rehabilitation services.

Certification

The University of Tennessee offers the canine rehabilitation certificate program for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, and occupational therapists. Courses include online study, clinical animal labs, canine osteoarthritis, clinical practicum, and a written and oral exam.
