Training as a physical therapist or veterinarian is typically required to enter the field. Students obtain additional training by participating in internships and/or clinical experience via supervised fieldwork.
Successful PTAs love animals and enjoy the challenge of returning them to good health. They also need strong observational, analytical, and diagnostic ability; patience; empathy; and top-notch communication and teaching skills in order to educate owners and caretakers about the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options. Those who would like to launch their own businesses must have an entrepreneurial mindset, knowledge of business and financial management practices, strong leadership ability, and excellent marketing and communication skills in order to successfully promote their businesses on social media and in their community.
