Employers
Those who teach family and consumer science can find work with public and private high schools, adult education programs, and consumer science college programs. Teachers also work for government extension programs. Those interested in business can find work with retail stores, supermarket chains, hotels, restaurants, food and appliance manufacturers, marketing companies, and research firms.
Starting Out
Most colleges and universities have career services offices to assist students and bring employers and graduates together. Many large firms go to campuses to interview prospective employees. The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences offers job listings at its Web site, https://www.aafcs.org/resources/careers. Those interested in teaching should seek certification and apply to school districts. Many students work in the field of family and consumer science during college by participating in internships or summer employment. Often, these connections prove valuable in acquiring a permanent job, either at that organization or a related one.
In retail sales and product management, you may have to start at the bottom of the ladder with a company, in an entry-level position. With some experience, you'll be able to move on to assistant manager, then into management.
