The outlook for advertising-related workers was variable toward the end of the decade. For example, the Department of Labor anticipated that jobs for advertising, promotions, and marketing managers would increase faster than the average for all occupations through 2032, while graphic designers would increase at an average pace and advertising sales agents would decline.
Overall, demand for the higher levels of advertising workers will likely grow as companies seek managers with expertise to manage marketing campaigns, recommend innovative tactics for reaching customers, and provide guidance regarding pricing strategies.
"The continued rise of electronic media will result in decreasing demand for print advertisements," the Department of Labor explains. "However, the demand for advertising and promotions managers is expected to be concentrated in industries that rely on these workers to create digital media campaigns that target customers through the use of websites, social media, or live chats."
At the two extremes, enormous "mega-agencies" and small shops employing up to only 10 workers each offer employment opportunities for people with experience, talent, flexibility, and drive. In addition, self-employment and home-based businesses are on the rise. Many nonindustrial companies, such as banks, schools, and hospitals, will also be creating advertising positions.
In general, openings will become available to replace workers who change positions, retire, or leave the field for other reasons. Competition for these jobs will be keen, however, because of the large number of qualified professionals in this traditionally desirable field. Opportunities will be best for the well-qualified and well-trained applicant. Employers favor college graduates with experience, a high level of creativity, and strong communication skills. People who are not well qualified or prepared for agency work will find the advertising field increasingly difficult to enter. The same is also true for those who seek work in companies that service ad agencies.
