Film and Video Librarians

Outlook

Employment for librarians will grow about 3 percent (as fast as the average for all careers) from 2023 to 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). There will continue to be employment opportunities for film and video librarians as more and more films and videos are released to educate and entertain the public. Job openings will also arise due to older librarians retiring from the field. Demand for librarians in research and special libraries is expected to increase due to the increased availability of information in digital format. Employment for librarians who work for publishing, broadcasting, and content providers and in the motion picture and video industries are expected to increase by 16 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively, through 2033. Both of these outlooks are much faster than the average.

As with most careers, film and video librarians with advanced degrees and knowledge of the latest technology will have the best employment prospects.

Job opportunities have declined somewhat in recent years as a result of budget cuts and the practice of using lower-skilled workers, such as library assistants and technicians, to do some tasks that were performed by librarians in the past.
