Genealogical Researchers

Earnings

In 2024, genealogists earned average hourly pay of $29.22, according to PayScale. For those working full time, this equated to $60,778. Using its own methods of analysis, Glassdoor reported that genealogists earned median annual salaries of $77,590 in 2024, with total pay ranging anywhere from $58,000 to $108,000.

Heir hunters typically receive a commission (often 15 to 25 percent) of the amount of money that will be awarded to their client. Commissions can be lower for lower inheritance amounts or higher if a significant amount of research is necessary.

Salaried genealogical researchers receive paid holidays, vacations, and sick days; medical, dental, and life insurance; profit-sharing plans; 401(k) plans; retirement and pension plans; and other fringe benefits. Those who are self-employed must provide their own benefits.
