Genealogical Researchers

Unions and Associations

Genealogical researchers do not belong to unions, but they can join professional associations at the local, state, national, and international levels. These organizations provide publications, continuing education opportunities, special interest groups for genealogy specialists, networking events, conferences, and other resources.

Membership organizations for genealogical researchers include the Association of Professional Genealogists (which has a Forensic Genealogy Special Interest Group); Council for the Advancement of Forensic Genealogy; International Association of Professional Probate Researchers, Genealogists & Heir Hunters; International Society of Genetic Genealogy, and the National Genealogical Society (which has a Committee on Genetic Genealogy and offers a wealth of professional development classes, webinars, and conference sessions). The Board for Certification of Genealogists, Genealogical Institute of the Maritimes, and the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists provide voluntary certification.
