Unions and Associations

Unions that represent the interests of music teachers include the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association. The American Association of University Professors' purpose is to "advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good." The American String Teachers Association, The College Music Society, Music Teachers National Association, and the National Association for Music Education are membership organizations for music educators. The National Association of Schools of Music and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation accredit postsecondary music and teacher education programs. Don't forget to check out resources that are provided by state and local music organizations, such as the Illinois State Music Teachers Association and the Chicago Area Music Teachers Association.
