Political Reporters

Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that employment for reporters, news analysts, and journalists will decline by 3 percent from 2023 through 2033. Advertising revenue is expected to decline in television, radio, and newspapers. Consolidation in the newspaper and publishing industries is expected to continue. Applicants will face strong competition for reporting positions in major broadcast markets. For beginning reporters, stations in smaller markets will provide the best opportunities. Occasionally, a beginner can use contacts and experience gained through internship programs and summer jobs to obtain a reporting job immediately after graduation.

Technology has a big impact on the way news is reported. The development of satellite technology and portable video cameras have revolutionized broadcast journalism over the last 45 years, and new developments will likely have the same powerful effects. As the Internet competes for TV's viewers and radio's listeners, newsrooms will continue to make better use of the technology. Many radio stations broadcast over the Web, and most TV stations now have traditional and mobile Web pages that feature up-to-the-minute local news coverage.
