Most adapted physical education specialists work in school systems for kindergarten through high school students. Some may work in preschool and early childhood education centers, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, or hospitals. The work is physical as well as mental. Specialists must have good physical and clear communication skills to instruct and guide students and listen closely to them throughout the exercises. They work with individual groups and other specialists to help students improve their skills and achieve goals.
Some schools and facilities will have larger budgets and more up-to-date equipment and facilities than others. Adapted physical education specialists may adjust education plans based on the available equipment and the nature of the environment.
Physical education classes may be indoors and outdoors, depending on the students' motor skills and abilities. Adapted physical education specialists also work in school and home offices, using computers and various software for report writing and record keeping.
