Unions and Associations

Video editors who are employed by television networks and local television news stations can seek union representation from the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians. Those who work in the film industry often join the Motion Picture Editors Guild. Some video editors are members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada. American Cinema Editors and Motion Picture Sound Editors are the major professional membership organizations for film and television editors. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences provides scholarships and recognizes excellence in editing via the Emmy Awards. Other helpful organizations for film and television editors include the American Film Institute and Women in Film.
