Education and Training Requirements

High School

Knowledge of math, science, business, and law is important in brownfield development work. Take as many classes as possible in mathematics, including algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics. Science and computer classes are essential. The ability to communicate clearly and express ideas verbally and in writing helps in creating reports and presentations, so be sure to take English classes also.

Postsecondary Education

Most jobs in brownfield development and site management require an undergraduate degree. Useful course work focuses on environmental science, including soil science, geology, biology; environmental law, government, business management, mathematics (algebra, geometry, physics, calculus), engineering, chemistry, and English and communications. Computer skills are essential for creating spreadsheets, mapping locations, and studying data. Take classes in computer-aided design and geographic information systems. Some specialists and site managers have a master's degree or Ph.D. in science, and have experience working in laboratories using different instruments and techniques.
