Each work day is different for brownfield redevelopment specialists and site managers. They spend part of their time outdoors, inspecting and taking samples at abandoned sites such as factories, military test sites, and even old mines. The sites are often dirty and hazardous, filled with debris, uneven foundations, and unstable structures. They follow safety precautions by wearing proper gear and head protection. They also visit sites in all types of weather; for instance, to test storm drainage, they may take samples at a site during or after a heavy rain storm.
Brownfield redevelopment specialists and site managers also work in corporate offices as well as home offices, using computers and data software to generate reports and presentations. They work with others such as environmental scientists and technicians to create and monitor remediation plans and schedules. They are in regular contact with clients by phone, e-mail, and in person, discussing projects and keeping clients informed of progress.
Work hours also vary depending on project deadlines and schedules. Some weeks may be 40 hours, whereas others may require 50 or more work hours, with days starting before dawn and ending late in the evening. When deadlines are approaching, specialists and site monitors may work during weekends and holidays to keep the project on schedule.
