New cashiers with no experience are generally paid the federal minimum wage, which, as of 2024, is $7.25 per hour.

In May 2023, the median hourly salary for cashiers, excluding those in the gaming industry, was $14.29, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. A cashier working full time at this rate of pay would have a yearly income of approximately $29,720. The department also reported that the lowest paid 10 percent earned less than $10.86 per hour, or $22,580 per year, and the highest paid 10 percent made more than $17.88 hourly, or $37,190 annually. Wages are generally higher for union workers than for nonunion workers in service occupations. In 2023, cashiers employed by food and beverage stores had the highest median annual wage among cashiers, $31,110.

Gaming industry cashiers generally earned more than their non-gaming industry colleagues. For example, the median hourly wage of gaming industry cashiers in May 2023 was $15.98 per hour. On annual basis, the median annual wage of gaming industry cashiers was reported to be $33,230. The lowest 10 percent of gaming industry cashiers earned $22,630 per year; while, the highest 10 percent of these cashiers earned $53,540 per year.

Some cashiers, especially those working for large companies, receive health and life insurance as well as paid vacations and sick days. Some are also offered employee retirement plans or stock option plans. Cashiers are sometimes given merchandise discounts. Benefits are usually available only to full-time employees. Many employers try to save money by hiring part-time cashiers and not paying them benefits.
