Outlook

Employment for cashiers is expected to decline through 2032, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Part of this sluggish forecast is due to the rising popularity of online shopping and self-service checkouts in retail establishments. However, the growth of huge retail shopping chains has helped fuel a constant need for cashiers. Moreover, due to a high turnover rate among cashiers, jobs will become available as workers leaving the field are replaced. Each year almost one-third of all cashiers leave their jobs for various reasons.

Future job opportunities will be available to those experienced in business machine operation and customer service. Many part-time jobs should also be available. Although the majority of cashiers employed are 24 years of age or younger, many businesses have started diversifying their workforce by hiring older persons and those with disabilities to fill job openings.
