Coal Miners

Unions and Associations

The union to which most unionized coal miners belong is the United Mine Workers of America, although some are covered by the International Union of Operating Engineers. Some independent unions also operate within single firms. The following organizations provide useful resources for those interested in careers in coal mining: National Mining Association, and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. The Mine Safety and Health Administration is a federal agency that seeks to "prevent death, disease, and injury from mining and to promote safe and healthful workplaces for the nation's miners."
