The median yearly salary of adult basic and secondary education and literacy teachers and instructors was $60,560 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Earnings ranged from less than $39,710 to more than $97,980 a year. Teachers employed at elementary and secondary schools had mean annual earnings of $62,290. English language and literature teachers who worked at local junior colleges earned $73,260. Depending on the state, teachers usually receive a retirement plan, sick leave, and health and life insurance. Some schools may grant sabbatical leave.

Overseas employers usually offer low pay, but they sometimes provide housing, airfare, medical care, or other benefits as part of the teaching contract.
