English as a Second Language (ESL) Teachers

Unions and Associations

Some ESL teachers join the American Federation of Teachers or the National Education Association. These unions bargain on behalf of the teachers regarding contract conditions such as wages, salaries, hours, and benefits. Additionally, many organizations provide useful resources to ESL teachers. Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages International Association is the leading professional organization for ESL teachers. It offers career resources, a social networking page for members, job listings, publications, and continuing education. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards offers certification. The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation accredits teacher education programs. The Center for Applied Linguistics and the National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition offer a variety of publications and research regarding English-language acquisition.
