Education and Training Requirements

High School

A good foundation for a career as a fuel cell technician includes classes in mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science, and shop. Communication skills are also important in this job so be sure to take English and speech classes.

Postsecondary Education

Most fuel cell technicians have an associate’s or bachelor's degree in engineering technology and general science. Some other majors that technicians may have degrees in include energy management and systems, biomedical technology/technician, and architectural engineering technology/technician. A few colleges offer degrees or specializations in fuel cell technology. Some schools offer fuel cell technician training programs.

Other Education or Training

Fuel cell technicians continue their education throughout their careers. They attend conferences and educational events that are offered by professional groups such as the Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association and SAE International.
