Fuel cell technicians usually have several years of work experience. They receive on-the-job training. Many participate in technician training programs while in school, which can lead to offers for full-time work after graduation.

Fuel cell technicians are analytical and enjoy solving problems. They have good hand-eye coordination and are skilled at working with various materials and machinery. They are technologically savvy, and are well versed in various software programs such as computer-aided design (CAD) software and analytical and scientific software such as load simulators. Technicians are detail oriented, able to follow engineering specifications and schematics, and have strong interpersonal skills. Successful fuel cell technicians are able to work independently and as part of teams.
