Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) offers the following certification credentials: Certified Broadcast Meteorologist, Certified Consulting Meteorologist, Certified AMS Teacher, and Certified Digital Meteorologist. The National Weather Association offers the Weathercaster Seal of Approval (https://nwas.org/seal-of-approval). No licensing is required to work as meteorologist.

New incident meteorologists who are employed by the National Weather Service receive extensive training. Those who successfully complete the training program receive agency certification that qualifies them to work as an incident meteorologist.
