Incident Meteorologists

Aspiring incident meteorologists must first obtain several years of experience in general meteorology—as well as complete classes and workshops in incident meteorology—before becoming eligible for work as an IMET.

Incident meteorologists must have top-notch analytical skills to be able to quickly evaluate large amounts of data from weather balloons, radar, satellites, and in-person observations to provide reliable forecasts to wildland firefighters. They must be excellent communicators because they lead or participate in daily briefings with wildland firefighters, government officials, the media, and other stakeholders. Other important traits include the ability to multitask, calmness under pressure, and strong time-management skills. Incident meteorologists need extensive technological knowledge regarding the use of fire spread software models and other predictive incident management models.
