Laboratory Technicians and Technologists

Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) predicts that employment for clinical laboratory technologists and technicians will grow by 5 percent, or about as fast as the average for all careers, through 2033. In the coming years, more technologists and technicians will be needed to operate and maintain the equipment that is used for diagnosing and treating a range of health conditions. The aging population is expected to increase demand for diagnostic laboratory tests. Additionally, more genetic conditions are being detected through the use of prenatal testing.

Job opportunities for biological technicians is projected to grow 7 percent from 2023 to 2033, according to the DOL. This is faster than the average for all occupations. "Synthetic biology is expected to create jobs for workers who redesign biological systems or living organisms for medical, manufacturing, and agriculture applications," according to the DOL. "Continued growth in biotechnology research and development projects, such as using cells to deliver drugs within the human body, is expected to support demand for biological technicians."

Laboratory professionals with advanced education, certification, and specialized skills will have the best job prospects.
