Laboratory technicians and technologists work in clean, well-lit, and usually air-conditioned settings. They often handle infectious materials, hazardous chemicals, and sometimes radioactive substances. In general, there are few hazards associated with these materials as long as proper methods of sterilization and handling of specimens, materials, and equipment are used. Some lab professionals work in clean rooms and must wear special protective clothing. Those employed in agricultural biotechnology sometimes work outdoors.
Laboratory technicians and technologists often spend much of their days standing or sitting on stools. A 40-hour, five-day week is normal, although some technicians and technologists may be required to work after hours to monitor experiments. Some companies are open 24 hours a day, and some technicians and technologists may be required to work at night and on weekends.
Laboratory technicians and technologists derive satisfaction from knowing their work is very important. They contribute to producing medications that help people live healthier lives, as well as products that protect the environment and have other beneficial purposes. The work involves some very repetitive tasks that some people may find boring. Additionally, the work must often be completed by deadlines, even though it is often very painstaking.
