Education and Training Requirements

High School

A good foundation for future work as a landman includes classes in math, science (geology in particular), English, and computer science. Learning another language may also be useful.

Postsecondary Education

Most landmen have a bachelor's degree in business, energy management, land and resource management, or other related areas. Courses cover such topics as business management, petroleum geology, energy structures and markets, financial management, and project management in the oil and gas industry and/or the energy or renewable energy industry. Knowledge of real estate laws and government regulations are essential in the job, so classes in these topics are also beneficial.

The American Association of Professional Landmen accredits undergraduate and graduate level energy management and petroleum land management programs. Visit https://www.landman.org/professional-development/education/accredited-programs for a list of accredited schools.

Certification

Colleges and universities, online learning platforms, and professional associations offer certificate programs in land and resource management, business, energy management, and other fields. For example, the American Association of Professional Landmen offers a renewable energy certificate program. Visit https://www.landman.org/professional-development/education for more information. Certificate programs typically last six months to a year are are available in online, in-person, and hybrid formats. Such programs are a good way to build your skills without enrolling in a degree program.
