Magicians

Work Environment

Magicians generally perform indoors in magic clubs, small theaters, homes, and schools. They arrive at a performance site several hours early to set up props and place any hidden objects. Although performances may run less than an hour, magicians spend many more hours practicing their routines so that everything goes exactly as planned. They have to be able to perform under pressure, maintaining their composure and timing in front of an attentive audience.

Most magicians work on a part-time basis, performing at night or on weekends. They may have to do quite a bit of traveling to get from show to show. Some may find it challenging to perform the same routines over and over while still making each show fresh and original. Others spend a great deal of time creating new illusions and perfecting new routines.

Magicians should be able to work closely with their assistants. It is vital to create an atmosphere of trust as teamwork is often needed to perform intricate illusions.

Despite the long hours required to polish their routines, magicians should enjoy entertaining. Their hard work is paid off when they amaze and astonish audiences through their array of illusions.
