Nanotechnicians employed by government agencies may be members of the American Federation of Government Employees and other unions. Member organizations for nanotechnicians include the American Institute of Physics, IEEE, Materials Research Society, American Chemical Society, and American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Many professional associations have nanotechnology subgroups and councils, or provide information and resources for nanotechnology professionals. For example, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society offers online member forums and educational offerings at the society’s annual conference. Nanotechnicians may also be members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Nano Science and Technology Institute, Nanotechnology Industries Association, and the National Nanotechnology Initiative.
