Operating Engineers

Employment of construction equipment operators is projected to grow by 10 percent, faster than average for all careers, through 2028, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Job opportunities for pile-drivers will be even better, growing much faster than the average for all careers. There will be many opportunities for operating engineers. They will be needed to assist with the repair of highways, bridges, dams, harbors, airports, subways, water and sewage systems, power plants, and transmission lines. Construction of schools, office and other commercial buildings, and residential property will also stimulate demand for these workers. However, the construction industry is sensitive to changes in the overall economy, so the number of openings may fluctuate from year to year. Employment for operating engineers is also tied to the availability of federal government funding for infrastructure projects. When funding is available, there will be more jobs for operating engineers. When budgets are cut, there will be fewer jobs for operating engineers. Those who are skilled at operating more than one type of machinery will have the best job prospects.
