Operating Engineers

Unions and Associations

The following three organizations each represent a different aspect of the occupation of operating engineer.

The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) represents thousands of leading firms in the industry, operating through a network of chartered chapters, who help build America. The AGC focuses on training its members through continuing and online education programs for project managers and construction executives. The AGC also offers educational programs in areas such as building information modeling, lean construction, supervisory training, and project management.

The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) is a trade union that primarily represents operating engineers who work as equipment operators, mechanics, and surveyors in the construction industry, and stationary engineers who work in operations and maintenance in building and industrial complexes and in the service industries. The IUOE also represents workers in a wide variety of other industries. The IUOE's goals as a union are to protect prevailing wages on public projects and control health care costs through coalition building. With over 400,000 members in 123 local unions, the IUOE is the tenth largest union in the AFL-CIO. It also offers more than 100 training and apprenticeship programs.

The nonprofit NCCER is an educational foundation whose mission is to "provide rigorous and relevant workforce development solutions that create opportunities for individual career advancement and support industry growth." It offers curricula for approximately 70 craft areas, a variety of assessments at NCCER-accredited training and assessment centers in the United States, certifications in three occupations, and a variety of instructor certifications.
