Bakery Workers

Earnings

The salary range for bakers and food batchmakers is wide due to factors such as size and type of employer, the employee's experience, and job position. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median yearly earnings for all bakers were $34,950 in May 2023. Salaries ranged from less than $24,960 for the bottom 10 percent of all bakers to more than $46,980 to the top 10 percent of all bakers. Fifty percent of bakers earned between $29,570 and $38,760. Mean yearly earnings for bakers working in bakeries and tortilla manufacturing were $35,750; those in traveler accommodation, $46,080; and those in restaurants and other eating places, $33,250.

Most bakery workers are eligible for overtime pay and premium pay for weekend work. Route drivers often work on commission, receiving base pay plus a percentage of their sales. Workers in apprentice positions are normally paid less than the full wages of experienced employees, but their pay increases as they obtain experience. In addition to regular pay, employees often receive benefits such as paid vacations and holidays, health insurance, and pension plans.
