Work Environment

Clowns work irregular hours in varying conditions. They may work indoors or outdoors, on their feet for hours at a time, or in full costume and makeup. Costumes are expensive; a pair of shoes alone can cost $175 to $300. Some clowns have equipment that needs to be transported and kept in good repair.

To find the best jobs, clowns must travel often, staying in hotels and spending long hours on the road. They may find themselves in a new city every week or month. They face stiff competition for the best jobs and may receive no recognition for their work. They work anonymously, especially if they work as part of a team.

Clowns work mostly weekends, summers, and holidays, although party clowns and those who find television jobs work year-round. Professional clowns enjoy great freedom in their schedules, are able to choose employers, and have more opportunities to travel.
