Cruise Ship Workers

Earnings

There are so many variables that it is hard to gauge the salary average for this industry. First, many employees are hired on a contractual basis—anywhere from four to six months for housekeeping, wait staff, and the concessionaires. The size of the cruise line and the region it sails may also affect wages. According to the Cruise Ship Jobs Guide, salaries can range from as low as $500 per month to as high as $10,000 per month, depending on the job. For example, the monthly salary for a cruise ship executive chef is $4,500 to $7,800 (or $54,000 to $93,600 per year). ZipRecruiter reported that in 2024, executive chefs who worked on cruise ships earned about $86,886 per year (or $7,240 per month). Cruise ship galley cleaners, dishwashers, or pot washers earn $500 to $700 per month (or $6,000 to $8,400 annually). Galley stewards averaged $42,112 per year in 2024, according to Glassdoor.com. Most entry-level social positions offer salaries that range from $1,800 to $2,300 per month ($21,600 to $27,600 per year). Some employees count on passengers' tips to greatly supplement their income. Restaurant and house staff workers can earn anywhere from $300 to $600 in weekly tips.

Employee benefits include room and board, and all meals while on board. Most cruise lines offer emergency health coverage to their employees, regardless of the length of contract. Full-time employees are also offered health insurance, paid sick and holiday time, stock options, and company discounts.
