E-sports coaches work for franchises that are affiliated with leagues (e.g., Call of Duty League, Overwatch Champions Series) that are owned by game development companies or other entities. Others coach high school or college e-sports athletes. Some coaches work as streamers and provide coaching services as a side gig.

Starting Out

You will need to “pay your dues” before becoming a coach of a well-known, professional e-sports team. To do so, you’ll need to first become an expert in and skilled at playing the games that you would like to coach, then offering your coaching services as an assistant on a lower-level or amateur team. Platforms such as Discord offer communities where amateur teams advertise for coaches. You should also attend industry events and competitions and continue participating in gaming events as a competitor. Consider joining grassroots e-sports gaming communities and develop a reputation on social media as an expert regarding coaching and training tips. You should also create YouTube tutorials or stream on platforms such as Twitch to share your knowledge with others. Networking is extremely important, so you should work hard to make connections with other coaches to get noticed. Perhaps you could even find a mentee to help guide you as you try to break into coaching.
