Employment for education directors and museum teachers is expected to be good during the next decade. There are approximately 850 million visits each year to American museums, according to the American Alliance of Museums, and museums remain a popular destination.
Despite this prediction, competition for jobs will be strong—especially for education directors. Many educators with specialties in sciences, the arts, or zoology are interested in becoming education directors at museums and zoos. Competition is especially intense for positions in large cities and in institutions with more prestigious reputations. Some smaller museums and botanical gardens may cut out their education director position altogether when the economy is poor, or they may get by with part-time staff.
