Emergency Management Directors

Advancement Prospects

Emergency management directors can advance by leaving their current positions to work at larger employers. For example, an EMD of a mid-size city such as Madison, Wisconsin, can advance to become the director of emergency management of a large city such as Chicago, Illinois. A director in the latter position would likely receive a higher salary and better benefits and have a larger support staff. A director at a large employer could advance to national-level positions with the federal government or with nonprofit agencies such as the Red Cross.
