Work Environment

Fashion design is competitive and stressful, but often exciting and glamorous. Many designers work in cluttered and noisy surroundings. Their work environment may consist of a large room with long tables for cutting out patterns or garments. There may be only one or two other people working in the room, or there may be several other workers. Many designers travel a great deal for showings and conferences. They may spend time in stores or shops looking at clothing that has been manufactured by competitors.

Most designers work a 40-hour week, but they may have to work more during rush periods. Styles previewed for one season require a great amount of work during the weeks and months before a show. The work pace is usually hectic as pressure builds before collection showings.
