Earnings

Experience counts for a lot when it comes to a designer's salary. Geographic location also plays a part in salary differences. Floral designers in the Northeast and on the West Coast traditionally enjoy higher than average salaries, compared to floral designers in other parts of the United States. Stores located in large urban areas tend to have higher annual sales than those in rural areas, resulting in higher pay for their employees.

Floral designers had median annual earnings of $34,690 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Well-established floral designers with a steady customer base earned more than $46,650 annually. Less experienced florists earned less than $24,960 annually. Fifty percent of floral designers earned between $29,120 and $38,940. The department also reports that florists who were employed in floral shops earned a mean annual salary of $35,220.

Salary.com reports higher salaries for florists. It reports that floral designers earned median annual salaries of $56,452 in October 2024, with earnings ranging from $36,155 to $78,942.

Depending on the store, designers may be offered sick leave and vacation time, health and life insurance, as well as other benefits. Self-employed florists must provide their own health insurance and other benefits.
