Median annual earnings of food scientists and technologists were $82,090 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The highest paid workers earned more than $135,430, and the lowest paid earned less than $48,480. Fifty percent of food scientists and technologists earned between $63,980 and $105,640.
Earnings of food technologists also vary by the industry in which they are employed. Those working in scientific research and development had mean annual earnings of $104,930; in scientific research and development services, $104,930; and in sugar and confectionery product manufacturing, $81,700.
According to the 2024 Institute of Food Technologists Compensation and Career Path Report (which is based on a survey of IFT members), the median salary for science of food professionals was $107,300. The IFT says that "compensation and benefits headed the list of factors influencing job satisfaction, according to the survey, followed by supportive management and work/life balance."
Most food technologists receive generous benefit plans, which usually include health insurance, life insurance, pension plans, and vacation and sick pay. Others may receive funds for continuing education.
