Major professional organizations for geographers include the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS), Association of American Geographers, Cartography and Geographic Information Society, ESRI, and URISA. The GIS Certification Institute and ASPRS provide certification. The U.S. Geological Survey is a federal agency that is a major employer of GIS specialists. The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science is a membership organization of more than 60 colleges and universities that offer GIS education.
