Hypersonic weapons and aircraft are those that can fly at speeds of at least five times the speed of sound (i.e., Mach 5). This is approximately 3,800 miles per hour. Hypersonics technicians help engineers and scientists develop, design, and test hypersonic technology, which can be used for military purposes (offensive and defensive) and nonmilitary purposes such as civilian transport of cargo and passengers and space launch and spacecraft retrieval.
