Certification or Licensing

SpaceTEC, the National Science Foundation’s Center for Aerospace Technical Education, offers the certified aerospace technician core certification to entry-level workers who demonstrate their knowledge in six areas: Introduction to Aerospace, Applied Mechanics, Basic Electricity, Test and Measurements, Materials and Processes and Aerospace Safety. Advanced standing is available in the following areas: Aerospace Vehicle Processing; Aerospace Manufacturing; and Aerospace Composites. To be eligible for the certification examination, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • have a two-year technical college program degree
  • have/had a two-year technical military assignment
  • hold a Federal Aviation Agency airframe/powerplant certificate
  • have completed two or more years of on-the-job training and experience in the aerospace industry

Other Requirements

Hypersonics technicians must undergo a background investigation in order to receive a general security clearance or top secret level clearance. In the United States, many employers require hypersonics technicians to be U.S. citizens.
