Hypersonics Technicians

Employment Prospects

Employers

Major aerospace companies that employ hypersonics technicians include General Atomics, Colibrium (a GE Aerospace company), Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Leidos Dynetics, and Boeing. Federal government employers include the U.S. Department of Defense and Energy, the U.S. military (including the Air Force Research Laboratory, Army Research Laboratory, and Naval Sea Systems Command), NASA, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Many technicians work at one of the more than 90 universities and colleges that are members of the University Consortium for Applied Hypersonics.

Starting Out

Many employers hire technicians directly after they graduate from college, complete an apprenticeship program, or are discharged from the military. Additionally, a technician may work in general aerospace or the defense sector before obtaining specialized knowledge and training to become qualified to work as a hypersonics technician.

Job leads can be obtained by networking, attending career fairs, joining and utilizing the resources of professional associations (such as the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics), working with a recruiting firm, using the resources of one’s college career services office, or by visiting the career Web sites of potential employers. Additionally, the University Consortium for Applied Hypersonics hosts student and industry networking events for job seekers.
